When you have a special needs child, you need to plan carefully for your child’s adult life. Some special needs adults may be able to live independently if they have assistance. Pennsylvania has personal care homes that may be an option for your adult child.

A personal care home is not the same as a nursing home. According to the Department of Human Services, a personal care home is a residential facility for people who need help with some tasks. The residents usually do not require medical care.

What services do personal care homes provide?

A personal care home may be a good option if your adult child needs help with some daily tasks. Staff members can help special needs adults take care of their finances and run their errands. They can also provide assistance with laundry and household work. Additionally, the staff can help your adult child with bathing and other aspects of personal hygiene, if this is necessary.

What should you look for in a personal care home?

There are several personal care homes in the Pittsburgh area. As you decide where your adult child will live, there are a few things you should consider. Will the location allow your child to easily access public transportation and shopping centers? Is it close to your home so that you can visit easily?  You are planning ahead for your adult child, but want to be available as much as you can.

You may also want to consider the size of the facility. If your adult child will feel more comfortable in a smaller home, you may want to look at personal care homes with fewer residents.

Personal care homes usually charge fees each month. As you consider your options, you may also want to look into ways to pay for this care and make it more affordable.
