How can you bring up nursing home care to your parents?

On Behalf of | Aug 31, 2020 | Long Term Care Planning | 0 comments

It is not easy to bring up the topic of assisted living care with your parents. As your parents age, they may have several health problems and health risks. Over time, it can become necessary for them to have access to 24-hour care.

How can you have this conversation? Let’s explore a few possibilities below,

Choose an organic way to bring up nursing care

Do not bring up nursing homes out of the blue. This can startle and put people off the idea of nursing home care. While you do not want to wait until it is too late, you can bring it up if your parents suffered minor injuries due to falls or other accidents. You can explain that you may not always be able to help in time and if the injury occurs again, it could be worse.

Talk candidly and talk early

The first rule of the conversation is to listen. Your parents may have anxiety over moving to a nursing home or assisted living facility. This is a major life change. Do not sell the nursing home to your parents. Instead, listen to how they feel on the matter. Address fears and concerns but also ask questions. To help ease concerns, you can visit a nursing home with your parents to ensure that it is a proper fit.

This is not a conversation you want to wait to have either. Have the conversation before any health crisis appears. If there is a healthcare emergency, you do not want to have to rush plans. To prepare in advance provides you with a way to methodically plan for the transition into a care facility.
