What is a dementia-friendly community?

On Behalf of | Sep 27, 2019 | Firm News | 0 comments

Dementia is a horrible part of aging. While there is no guarantee that you will suffer from it, it is still a scary prospect. If you have a loved one who has this condition, then you truly understand how it works and what it does to a person. Someone with dementia needs a lot of support. This has spawned some communities to become dementia-friendly. Could this be on the horizon for a community in Pennsylvania?

Fox News explains that a dementia-friendly community is one where everyone works together to support and care for people with dementia. They do this by offering support groups and other social gatherings.

Businesses also take steps. They work to make shopping and doing business there easier for those who may have the condition. They also learn how to best serve this segment of the population.

These communities provide training for everyone, including business owners and professionals, such as estate planners. In these trainings, they learn the best ways to communicate with a dementia patient. They learn about the limitations of the condition and how they can help a person to feel comfortable going out into the community.

The overall goal is an educated community that can welcome and embrace those who have dementia. The actions in the community will help these people to live more independent and to overcome the stigma that comes with dementia.

When everyone in a community comes together to be supportive, it creates the dementia-friendly community where if you have this condition, you can feel safe and valued. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
